Student Finance can cover your tuition fees and help with living costs. Applying is straightforward when you know the steps. Here's the process for eligible home students in England.

1. Choose your course first

You apply to the university or college first. You don't need a confirmed place before applying for finance, but you need to know your course and where you'll study.

2. Create your online account

Apply on GOV.UK. Have your passport, National Insurance number and bank details ready.

3. Fill in the application

You'll give personal, course and residency details. To apply for the income-assessed part of the maintenance loan, you'll also be asked about household income.

4. Send any evidence

Student Finance England may ask for proof of identity, residency or income. Reply quickly so your payment isn't delayed.

5. Get paid

Tuition fees are paid straight to your university. Maintenance loans are paid into your bank account in instalments, usually once you've registered on your course.

How repayment works

You only start repaying once you earn over the threshold, and you repay a percentage of what you earn above it, not of what you borrowed. Try our repayment calculator to see real numbers.

Don't miss the deadline. Apply as early as you can, even before your place is confirmed, so your money arrives on time.
