A foundation year is an extra year at the start of a degree, so a 3-year degree becomes a 4-year course. It's designed for people who don't meet the usual entry requirements, or who want to build confidence before starting.
Who is it for?
- People without A-levels, BTECs or an Access course
- Mature students returning to education after a break
- Career changers moving into a new subject
- Anyone who wants to build study skills before degree-level work
What do you study?
You'll cover academic skills such as essay writing, research, referencing and presentations, plus an introduction to your subject. Teaching is usually supportive, with smaller groups and plenty of guidance.
What happens after?
Pass the foundation year and you carry straight on into Year 1 of your degree, with no need to apply again. You'll graduate with the same honours degree as students who started in Year 1.
Can I get Student Finance?
For an integrated foundation year that's part of a degree, eligible home students can usually get a tuition fee loan and a maintenance loan for all four years. Check your eligibility with our quick checker.
